BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger - Nov 24 09 B
It must seem pretty strange for me to try to get into the fighting genre with this game. Arc System Works knows this genre and its audience well--and with each game it released in its signature series, Guilty Gear, it got increasingly difficult for newcomers to get in. BlazBlue is said to be a simplified version of Guilty Gear, but we're talking in relative terms here. BlazBlue is still unquestionably more complex than Street Fighter 4 or Tekken 6.
Match #5
My Character: Ragna
Opponent's Character: Tager
I'm fighting Chakrogeddon here. No relation to the meteor. Upon seeing Tager win the first round here, you might begin to think that Tager is unbalanced and is too strong for this game. That isn't true. In fact, among top-level competitive players, Tager is ranked far at the bottom. He's just simply not mobile enough. But anything below that, Tager is great. He's easy to use. But he's still not favorably unbalanced here either. I win the second round using Ragna. He stiill needs to watch his step around Tager...Ragna is a character who can heal himself, but this is offset by him having bad defense. Tager, being as big as an ox, does huge Soviet damage. Thus, a Ragna getting trapped by a Tager is dead meat.
Also, do you see how Ragna says, "I'll show you...the power of the Azure"? Well, that was the beginning of his Astral Heat, the ultimate attack that finishes the match. Every character has one; Ragna's is called Black Onslaught. Tager just happened to fall down and went out of its range. A shame, as Black Onslaught looks really cool.
Match #6
My Character: Taokaka
Opponent's Character: Arakune
I've talked about Taokaka a few times already, so now I'm going to talk about Arakune. Is that really how his name is pronounced? I thought for sure it would be interpreted as "Arachne." Look at his emblem at the beginning: It's a spider. Arakune is a weird blob thing. (Ain't hard to tell.) He kind of resembles No Face from Spirited Away and has shaeshifting abilities much like No Face. Arakune is a former Sector Seven member, just like Litchi and Tager. He was a researcher who snuck his way to the Boundary, a strange portal full of unknown power. He obtained the knowledge of the Boundary, but it was too much for his body and it degenerated into what you see here. He can still speak English, but it's crazy and disjointed. Arakune's thirst for knowledge hasn't wavered; instead, it's increased into a bloodthirst. He will attack anyone if it will allow him to understand things more or if they get in the way of information. He's after Ragna in particular because Ragna's sword is the Azure Grimoire, a subject of intense curiosity for Arakune.
Arakune is played by Spike Spencer. He previously voiced Hanataro Yamada in Bleach, Simon in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and Shinji Ikari in Neon Genesis Evangelion. (Notice a pattern?) He has an unmistakable voice--except in this game, where he was cast against type. Taokaka has a special beef against Arakune, whom she calles "Squiggly." As Arakune lives near her village, Arakune frequently attacks its members. Taokaka is determined to get rid of him and make things peaceful again. It's more complex than that, of course, but I'll save it for the story mode runs.
Match #7
My Character: Bang
Opponent's Character: Haku-Men
I'll play as more characters...I just need to actually play as them for quite a bit and get the hang of them first, you know! For now, Bang is completely awesome and I love using him, even if there are characters I seem to use much better. Chakrogeddon is using Haku-Men, who, despite the name, is not a bunch of people individually called a Haku-Man. He's a single being. He's one of the Six Heroes who defeated the Black Beast many years ago. (We'll get into that in the story mode.) He's also the only one of the Six Heroes currently playable. Like Arakune, he saw the Boundary but was trapped within it. He slowly went crazy in there and now seems to indiscriminately attack everybody without bothering to find out who they are. His play style revolves around sword thrusts and slices, though he has a few highly-damaging signature moves and a bunch of parries as well. You'll probably notice his gauge at the bottom looks different than the other characters'. The green bar is the Heat Gauge; Haku-Men uses the Magatama system instead. It fills up on its own and has 8 portions. (The bottom one is cut off on this video.) It otherwise works the same as a Heat Gauge.
Haku-Men is weating his Spider-Man colors to this match. But I kept this one because of the line Bang says at the end. That has GOT to be humiliating to a guy like Haku-Men, a former hero collapsed on the ground and forced to hear Bang yell it out.
