BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger - Nov 24 09 C
So why did I get into a game from a company that makes stuff renowned for being newcomer-proof?
The characters. Each character is a bunch of non sequiturs that makes this cast unlike anything else. Even then, though, it's pretty restrained compared to Guilty Gear. We don't have anything like, say, a man puppeteered to fight in his sleep by a group of apparitions. But it works for me.
Match #8
My Character: Litchi
Opponent's Character: Arakune
Okay, now that I got Litchi's background taken care of, let's talk about the way she fights. But first, I'll tell you that her name is NOT pronounced the same way as the fruit (more commonly known as a lychee). It's actually "LIE-chi." Her staff, called Mantenbo, can change shape and move on its own. That's not all--a key part of Litchi's fighting style is that she will sometimes place the Mantenbo somewhere and continue fighting without it. With the Mantenbo on her back, her attacks are slower but longer in range. Without it, they're faster but shorter range. She also has different special moves and Distortion Drives when she has the Mantenbo as when she does not. A few of her moves will end with her in the opposite state than when she began, the most basic being her calling the Mantenbo to return to her. It twirls about and goes back to her like a boomerang, doing damage if it hits the opponent in the process.
As for Arakune...I'll save that for another day. Maybe when I actually play as him.
Litchi used to be good friends with the man who is now Arakune. She genuinely believes that there's a way to restore his sanity and perhaps even his body, but Arakune won't listen and perceives her as a threat. Arakune believes that there's nothing wrong with him and that he's still a normal human being. Despite his really bizarre (and hilariously disturbing) exit after the second round.
Oh yeah, and Arakune DOES speak with coherent use of English. It's just audibly cut off and fragmented.
Match #9
My Character: Noel
Opponent's Character: Haku-Men
Purple Noel is just so odd that I decided to have another go with her. Meanwhile, her opponent is Parachute Jumpsuit Haku-Men. I also like how there are random bystanders sitting around watching this fight like it was the most normal thing in the world. Oh, I haven't explained Noel's fighting style yet? As a law enforcement officer, she, of course, has to carry guns. She carries two of them here, which can transmogrify into bigger, more powerful guns by using up the Heat Gauge. I don't do that here; it wasn't necessary. That and I forgot the controller input sequence to do them. Instead, I use her ability, Chain Revolver. It quickens her attacks without decreasing their speed, allowing me to do many consecutive attacks for a lot of damage, as long as I don't perform the same attack twice in a row. There are many moves that work with the Chain Revolver, so on a good day, I could probably keep the Chain Revolver going on for a while.
I get the feeling Purple Noel is based on something...but I don't know what. If it helps any, Jin has a purple-skin palette too, but nobody else I can think of.
