Blazing Chrome is a side-scrolling action shooter that uses a great balance of classic game-play elements and modern sensibilities. Yes, there are lives, but with check-points after the bosses (of which there are usually 2 before the final boss per stage), unlimited continues, and the ability to continue from where you left off at the end of each stage, progress is always happening as long as you don't give up.

It's intense action along the entire way, with boss fights making up much of the game-play time in a way that's welcome. In fact, throughout the 6 Missions, nothing overstays it's welcome, and things keep fresh.

There are different weapons you can pick up (a-la Contra) and switch between (there are those modern touches again), but if you die you lose your current weapon (unless it's the default). Six-way shooting, ducking, dodge & roll, auto-switch melee attack, and a great look shows that the developers weren't going for an older style just because they were trying to cover up poor programming skills.

There are also multiple stages of difficulty, keeping things challenging but fair. Despite the final boss feeling like it took forever for me, overall it was a fun time. I'm not sure if I'll be rushing back to play it anytime soon, and the few hours I had with it was enough (hence my good vs great rating), but I'm glad I did play it and would recommend it to fans of the genre.
