When I attempted this again off camera, it went much smoother. Elemental armor, tosses up some Shells, it went swimmingly. It was a lot of fun, if you ask me. However...I was not so lucky when I tried the solo Frog variation... I was fine until he reached his random counter spells phase. And at first it was okay, since he kept using Fire2 (and I had equipped Red Mail). But then he got smart and started spamming Ice2...
