Block Duplication in Super Mario World (SNES) - A Wild Glitch Appears! #shorts
In Super Mario World for the SNES, there's a fairly simple glitch you can exploit to duplicate coin blocks and item blocks. In this short video, I'll show you the basics on how to perform the block duplication glitch.
Generally, if it's a block, it can be duplicated. The basic premise of the block duplication trick is that you need to kick a koopa shell UPWARD into the block as the shell overlaps the bottom edge of the block. The positioning can be picky, but you essentially want the shell to be halfway sticking into the bottom of the block you want to duplicate, then kick the shell while holding UP on the D-Pad.
If you did it properly, the original item block will remain untouched, and a new block will be created and opened, revealing the item inside.
Depending on where Mario (or Luigi, he can do it, too) is standing when you duplicate the block, and depending on the timing with which you release the koopa shell, the block will be duplicated up, up and left, up and right, left, or right of the original item block. For example if you're flush up against the item block when you kick the shell upward, the new item block will appear directly above the original. But if you're a little bit to the left of the item block and you release the koopa shell slightly later, the new item block will spawn one space up and left relative to the original block.
You can also duplicate spinning blocks in the same manner. In this example, I was able to duplicate a spinning block that overlapped a large Yoshi coin. After collecting the coin, the new block disappeared, and this disappeared block has some interesting properties.
If you run off screen and return, the block will become visible, but this is not necessary. Punching this block from below will produce a key. However, duplicating this block can produce different items depending on Mario's X coordinates as he duplicates the new block. For example duplicating the block to the right side will create a pair of flying Yoshi wings, which can help you complete levels much earlier than normal.
