Father Gascoigne is the first mandatory boss of Bloodborne, and this video explains some aspects of his character story and lore. I examine Father Gascoigne through a psychological lens, and I ask what was going through his mind in the events of the game when he went mad. This madness drove him to end his own wife's life, before turning against the other hunters in Yharnam. But the funny thing about this madness is that Father Gascoigne's personality and sense of self as a hunter were still intact. He felt that he was justified in ending the lives of innocent people due to his duties as a hunter. But why did he hold this belief? That's what I answer in the video.

My account relies on a piece of dialogue that he delivers in his boss fight, which is pretty easy to miss if you're not looking. This dialogue reveals that Gascoigne has lost the ability to see the humanity of human beings, and instead sees them as skin suits that conceals beasts who are hiding from the hunter's axe. And that's why he ended his wife's life, and sought to destroy the player: he thought we were already beasts!
