Blue Force (1993) PC Complete Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A beginning to end playthrough of Tsunami's 1993 PC CD-ROM graphic adventure, Blue Force.
The CD-exclusive Redbook audio interview with designer Jim Walls has been included after the final credits, beginning at 1:51:21.
Blue Force is a title with an interesting history for Sierra fans. It was designed by Jim Walls, creator of the Police Quest series and designer of the first three entries, after leaving Sierra because of *who knows what*. It bears many of the PQ hallmarks: though much more lax, it still focuses somewhat on the minutiae of police work, has a fair number of unforeseen ways in which the lead character can be killed, features a streamlined version of Sierra's classic SCI-interpreter icon driven interface, and digitized graphics for both sprites and backdrops. It really comes across as an alternative Police Quest 4.
Unfortunately, without some of Sierra's substantial talent backing this venture, it falls incredibly flat. It's not a bad game by a long shot, but considering the quality of the first three PQ games, Blue Force's contrived story forces the plot to make insane leaps in logic, the dialogue is terse and riddled with groan-inducing attempts at gruff seriousness and humor at inappropriate times, Ryan's personality switches at a second's notice from compassionate and thoughtful to conceited and selfish, and the graphics (though very nicely rendered) are a bit bland and lack any real personality. They're MUCH more cleanly rendered than those in Police Quest: Open Season, but they also lack all of the character that game's messy digitized blobs charmingly plastered across the monitor.
Also, and this is not meant as a mean-spirited cheap shot: if a game is going to use video, or cobble together digitized stills from video, wouldn't one think that a vaguely personable and/or attractive protagonist might be a good choice? Our hero, a recent graduate of the police academy, doesn't quite inspire as much confidence as his should, with his receding hairline making a would-be early 20-something appear as if he's 35. Especially when he gets run over by a car on his second day on the job. . . Yeah.
