Board Games vs. Video Games — Shouldn't There be More Overlap?
Board games and video games have both always been staple cornerstones of nerdy/geeky people, but somehow video games seem to have thrust themselves into the mainstream spotlight. Playing video games arguably isn't even nerdy anymore, but board games have somehow dodged this and retain their dorky reputation. The term "gamer" refers to someone who plays video games, not necessarily board games in the online colloquial space.
Shelfside's Ashton & Daniel bring you their thoughts on what's going on here, Daniel being much more of a gamer and Ashton being more into tabletop board games. Daniel has definitely played a wide palette of games, which we're now going to start listing because description tags definitely work: Star Fox, Kid Icarus, Call of Duty, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Mario stuff, Monster Hunter, League of Legends, Dark Souls, Destiny, Devil May Cry, Horizon Zero Dawn, Cuphead, Furi, The Evil Within, and more stuff I can't think of right now. Then there's all the let's plays he's watched, along with all the games he watched his friends plays.
But then at the same time, both of us at Shelfside have definitely played a respectable amount of board games, from old classics like Dune, Arkham Horror, or Acquire, to new stuff like Gloomhaven, Wingspan, Root, you name it. The big question is then: why isn't there more overlap of interest between the two hobbies? Or maybe, is it just a matter of board games not having enough exposure, while video games have already securely nestled themselves into the mainstream culture. There's even newer games like Mansions of Madness that utilize a companion app to facilitate gameplay, and you can even find apps for games that don't necessarily need them like Gloomhaven or Pandemic Legacy. Then there's also games that are both video games and board games like Sid Meier's Civilization.
While we probably don't have the answers, here's some thoughts on the matter from us! By the way all gameplay Footage here was from Daniel.
