The Bomberman series are filled with tons of fun gameplay, especially with friends, and this is where it all started.
...almost... this is the third Bomberman game, but the first one released on a console. An interesting sidenote is that the second game is being played from a first person view...
And sorry Europe, no Bomberman for you.
This game is pretty basic, walk around, bomb some, pick up powerups, 50 levels, no multiplayer.
And it got a pretty dark background story...
You see, Bomberman is one of multiple robots that works deep underground to produce bombs for evil forces.
One day he gains sentience, and thinks that his life is an "unbearable dreary existence" (copied from the manual).
But there is a rumor that if a robot would manage to escape and make it to the surface, then that robot would turn into a human (who spread these rumors? Other sentient robots? The evil forces so they can weed out sentient robots?).
So Bomberman decides to take the chance and escapes, using the bombs that he produces. He is discovered and the evil forces starts to hunt him down.
And in the end, ENDING SPOILER!!!, he finally manages to get to the surface...
...where he turns into a human... but not any human... he turns into the human from Lode Runner (only hinted in the NA version, directly written in the Japanese version).
