Book Discussion 22: Spider World: The Desert by Colin Wilson
This was an interesting work, as it portrayed spiders as the horrific and disgusting monsters I know them to be, without reducing me into a trembling, cold sweat. The author dealt with a scary premise for several people, with the odds stacked against humanity, in a way that still kept enough distance to the menace for it not to be paralyzing. There were some issues I had with the spiders' and people's behavior, as well as their psychic abilities, but I was still interested in the desolate world and small band of survivors. Looking into the series as a whole, the author took a break while working on the books, and his work seemed to suffer as a result. I believe the first three books of the Spider World series wound up being well-received, but anything beyond that nose-dived. It's a shame, though I would recommend the core trilogy that was written.
