I would argue that it's one thing for various ailments to afflict the party during the trip, such as injuries and illnesses, even though you have no way to prevent them. They're hazards of making this journey. However, I would think that someone being bitten by a zombie, which is a permanent ailment and problem, should happen as a result of something I mess up at. If I fail to defend the car as zombies mob us, either during an attempt to drive through them or as we're sitting stationary, that would make sense. As I'm driving along and it pops us as a random event though? That's just nonsense.
