Here we are, folks, the end of the game!

Anne awaits at Norende Ravine, in front of some kind of black fog where the Great Chasm once was. As you may recall, this is the place closest to the Celestial Realm in all of Luxendarc, which made it perfect for summon Ba'als directly to the world. Anne talks a bit about herself, that she was born to serve the god of the Celestial Realm, that Airy was her sister who betrayed that god to serve Ouroboros (who wanted to destroy the Celestial Realm), blah blah blah...

Anne's biggest trick this time around is Undermine, which sets your max HP to 1. The only way to treat it is with Undo, which I happen to lack in my build. Oh well. Other than that, I'm not worried about her.

With her out of the way, Altair explains that fog is a sign of dimensional flux, and if we pray hard enough, we can clear it out and reveal the Celestial Realm itself. What's this? It's... it's me! So, if you play on hardware, this is the point where the front-facing camera of the 3DS would turn on and you would see that the Celestial Realm is, in fact, the real world. Citra, however, lets you just plug in any image you like for the camera source, so I plugged in my avatar.

Anyway! As we journey through the Via Celestio, Altair recounts his memories with Vega, which are supposed to correspond to Ba'als that we haven't really encountered. Every "phase" is another memory of their time together, something that meant a lot to Vega, and it all leads to the altar.

There, we find Vega's soul, who seems to, um, bear a grudge. As you may recall, they were supposed to leave for Luxendarc together, but for some reason or another, she didn't make the journey. In fact, she says it was a trap and she was killed, and why wasn't Altair there to protect her!? But, really, it's the work of the false god, Providence. He draws power from her despair and whatnot, but despite all her suffering, he couldn't purge her love and hope for Altair. So, it's time to take the fight to him.

The fight against Providence has a gimmick or two to it. The main thing to watch for is the Mandate of Heaven trick, where he issues a command for one of your party members to attack another. Honestly, I'm a little unclear if you're supposed to KO them or just hit them, and the battle didn't give me a chance to clarify. Either way, you have a couple turns to do it, and if you don't, he'll try to wipe your party with Divine Punishment, which hits everyone for 9999 damage.

But as in any RPG, we prevail. Altair's soul leaves Tiz's body, they offer parting words, and.. that's it! Time to hightail it out of there. But as soon as we exit, we get another encounter. Surprise! Providence has another form, and it's one you may have seen. As an American, I'm most familiar with it on the $1 bill, but this image is known as the Eye of Providence. It, naturally, represents the God watching over the world.

There aren't too many nasty tricks... at least, in my opinion. The hands can use Ruin or Salvation, which are party-wide attacks. Providence also likes to cast Dispel to negate your buffs, like Warhead, which makes exploiting his weakness to Dark attacks a little harder (for my build, anyway). The biggest surprise is New World Order, where he turns the power of Bravely Second against you.

Halfway through the fight, he addresses us, or rather, the player. We may live in the Celestial Realm, but he rules it, and he can control everything. He can make our party attack each other, and he can even delete our save data. Or can he!? With one last hurrah from the cast, our saves are, well, saved, and we can finish the fight.

In victory, it's time to start building a better future, except Tiz isn't doing so hot. It was Altair's soul that kept him alive, so without that... But, suddenly, the Adventurer appears to offer gratitude for reuniting Altair and Vega. She offers a way to save Tiz, and reveals herself to be Deneb, a close friend of Altair and Vega. Incidentally, those are all the names of stars known as Summer's Triangle. Thanks to her intervention, everyone can have their happy ending. Just ignore the sequel hook, because they never made a Bravely Third. Bravely Default 2 is a completely separate thing.

With that, we unlock a few bonus dungeons and bosses, which provide an extra challenge. There's also a proper New Game+, which not only gives you plenty of options for what does and doesn't transfer, but also lets you pick any chapter to start from.

So, yeah, this was fun! I think Bravely Default might have a better story, but the gameplay saw some good improvements. I'm glad I played it again.

Tune in next time for something completely different!
