Garr joins the party at this point, and since Ryu isn't Bunyan-apprenticed, this is the first tanky unit we get. Garr has a very good counter attack rate, but pales in comparison to Peco, whose reprisal rate is unmatched and who gets a ridiculous amount of bulk if apprenticed to Fahl at lv. 1.

I think I'll settle for a party of Bunyan!Momo, Mygas!Ryu and Fahl!Peco for the time being, until the second half of the game starts. I considered intentionally screwing up my party by apprenticing Garr under Meryleep, and Nina under Bunyan, and making that my party, but in the end thought it would be really stupid. Instead, I'll go for an efficient run, where Ryu will probably function as a fast mage in random battles, using his vast MP resources to equal Bunyan-built Ryu. We'll see how that goes.

In this video, we face a whole gang of "bullies" (we fight only three though) and then defeat Balio and Sunder once and for all.

The bullies all have exactly 200 HP, and if one uses AoE attacks, it's possible to end this in one single turn. Ryu and Nina use their best spells while Momo finishes the battle with Blitz. Why was she given the best weapons in the game? Probably so that there wouldn't be any immediately obvious options of how to go about training her.

Then, Garr is forced into the battle and we fight the real boss.

Stallion will always use Barrier on the first turn, making magic useless in this battle. So no Magic Ball here. As you can see, even though Ryu has all those levels that screwed up his physical power, and though I don't have the most powerful weapon from the coliseum (I have a lighter one that enables me to take EX turns when transformed though), the best way to go about this battle is nevertheless to transform Ryu and use a Claw attack.

Momo can help out by using Last Resort and then repeatedly hitting the boss with Double Blow. She does about the same damage in one turn as Ryu does in two (both the normal turn, and the EX turn).

Garr can't help out with much besides predicting when Momo gets damage and healing her (she's very fragile after losing all her defence via Last Resort), so that's what he does.

It's possible to learn Resist in this battle, and is the earliest time you can do so in the game. I wasn't lucky in the recording but I later did the battle one more time just to get the skill. Let this video instead be a demonstration of how this Ryu build can still trivialise the battle, boasting enough AP to stay in dragon form to end the battle, and easily tanking hits. Bunyan!Ryu still does this quicker, though.
