FFT MBO+ Part 39: Endgame (Rofel, Kletian, Balk, Hashmal)
All the endgame maps prior to the final boss are in this video, namely:
Orbonne Monastery (two)
Murond Death City
Lost Sacred Precincts
Airship Graveyard
The level difference is as evident as ever here, with lv. 50 enemies facing my Chemist who isn't even lv. 20 yet I think. However, I have to remind that levels aren't as important as skills and equipment in FFT in terms of preparation.
I show my party setup at the start, and it mostly doesn't change for the future battles (will show it again when I face Altima). My party is around its full strength right now (at least under the given restrictions), though the female magician is still learning that Short Charge as a Time Mage. Most maps are over quickly so there's hardly any time for her to get the needed JP for the skill.
The reason why I want Short Charge so much is because I've learnt Lich as a Summoner, but casting it normally gives the target a chance to destroy the caster midcharge before she does anything. Needs SC to be effective, and it's worth it when you think about it (Lich tears 999 HP off some bosses, assuming it connects).
The first map is full of Knights and evasive fighters with mantles. This makes Agrias's swordskills, Ramza's Earth Slash and Summons especially valuable here, and Golem the perfect form of defence.
One of the monks here had HP Restore, and I got him into critical twice. Also, Ramza with max Brave + a Bracer does some scary damage with his fists. Too bad I didn't learn Two Swords with him.
The second map is a defeat-boss map, and the rest of the maps are going to be like that. This means not much time left to learn Short Charge.
First it's Rofel whom we must face. He's especially threatening as he can break equipment with his swordskills but if nobody's in range, he'll move in and try to petrify Ramza instead. This is where the party ambushes and cooperates to finish him off midcharge. If the battle isn't done this way, it can get really messy with all those mages and equipment breaking around.
Next is Kletian. He likes casting magic with horrid charge times so there's little challenging in beating him.
Balk's map, on the other hand, is a different thing altogether. He will not approach you at all, shooting from far away, while his trusted Hydra monsters fly towards the party and unleash ridiculously powerful attacks (hopefully they don't connect too often). There's also a Chemist who can restore Balk's HP to full sometimes, but his skillset is random every time you reset. Sometimes the best item he'll have is a Hi-Potion.
I found that the key here is to defeat Balk as soon as possible, killing other enemies with moves like Holy Explosion if they happen to get in the way.
Finally, we face Hashmal. The Time Mage couldn't get to 800 JP for Short Charge after this battle, so I had to change my Chemist to a Time Mage too, so that the spillover JP would help me achieve this result.
Hashmal's Quake knocked out most of my party in one casting, and most of them aren't quick enough to spread around so that only 1 or 2 characters are in range. I equipped Thief Hats and some better light armour, and I didn't lose anybody at all during the first turn.
Agrias and Ninja should deal the most damage to the boss here, as expected.
Also, thanks to everybody for providing challenge feedback on the previous video. I'm pretty upset how it took me 4 months to upload a series most of which I finished within a week's time. It seems there are some benefits to having extensive footage of a run instead of my usual way (uploading only highlights), but I need to think carefully what type of uploading I need for specific series.
