Second confrontation against the rival in this challenge. This time he's clearly at a level advantage, unlike the first match where both sides had just the lv. 5 starter available.

He opens with Gastly, who has a really silly moveset. It does trap with Mean Look and Curse to kill you in 4-5 turns, but that's all it does, really. It doesn't even have Hypnosis to have any hope of staying alive until those 4-5 turns of Curse effect are over, Spite doesn't help it at all and Lick won't affect normal-type targets.

Since this wonderful lv. 1 Togepi just hatched, I wanted to see how much damage it would do with Extrasensory - the egg move they gave you right off the bat in this version. Apparently, you're lacking the stat to have it deal respectable damage at lv. 1, but it still takes me 3 turns to KO that Gastly... who is lv. 14... Go figure.

Quilava is the toughest one here, as its Ember 2HKOs Onix, and 3HKOs Slowpoke (from what I've observed). There's also the accidental critical and burn which is to be taken into account. It likes to waste turns using Smokescreen however, which while being annoying means we can get some Screeches and Rock Tombs, or even better - put it to sleep with Yawn. I really love Yawn as a sleeping move since generation 3 - it's so much better to have a guaranteed sleep on turn 2 than, say, waste 5 turns in a row missing Sleep Powder, Lovely Kiss or Hypnosis, or whatever you have at any given point.

Anyway, Onix just uses Rock Tomb after some Screeches. Its attack is too low to deal decent damage otherwise.

Zubat was a huge pain in the arse in the same challenge in generation 2 because Bite was a special attack and it could hit through Onix's low-levelled special defence easily + the flinching and the occasional confusion if it opened with a successful Supersonic.

Bite is physical now, so we can more or less neutralise Zubat by opening with our Intimidate Ekans, and then doing Screech+Rock Tomb.

I probably won't record ALL of the other Rival battles in this challenge and stick to those that are different or challenging in one way or another.
