The Bren design was important from Czechoslovakia and produced by Britain since 1935, to be in active service between 1938 and 2006. The Bren was a licensed version of the Czechoslovak ZGB 33 LMG, which in turn was a modified version of the ZB model 26. Bren was a name that refers to the city of Brno in Czechoslovakia, a part in Moravia that was annexed by Hitler in March 1939. It was the primary infantry LMG of the Brits during WWII and was fitted with a bipod, but could also be mounted on a tripod or vehicle. Different variants existed from the Mark I until the Mark IV and also the L4 was a variant. The Bren required a 2-men crew to operate it and had different feed systems: a 20-round L1A1 mag, a 30-round detachable box mag and a 100-round detachable pan mag. Many Bren guns were rebarreled in the 1950s and it was replaced in the British Army by the L7 general-purpose machine gun. In the 1980s, it was supplemented by the L86 light support weapon, pushing the Bren back to a role as vehicle-mounted weapon. OFB in India still produces the Bren today under a different name and the gun also served in the Falklands War, the islands off the south coast of Argentina. The Falklands War started on 2 April 1982 with an Argentinian invasion and ended on 14 June 1982 with a British victory, much to the delight of PM Margaret Thatcher. Nearly 650 Argentines were killed and more than 11,300 combatants became POWs, while Britain saw 255 casualties and 115 captured men. Diplomatic relations between both countries were frozen until 1989, following a Madrid meeting. In Argentina however, it still remains a topic for discussion.
