SUSPECT ERWIN ROMMEL, WITH FINNTROLL 1984 & HIS S2-200 MMG (AL SUNDAN MAP BATTLEFIELD V)
It is well known that Field Marshal Erwin Rommel had fallen out with Adolf Hitler by June of 1944 but it was never really proven that he knew about the plans for the July 20 bomb plot against Hitler, carried out by devoted Christian Claus von Stauffenberg at the Wolf's Lair. Rommel had made more than one suggestion for battles that he was involved in but Hitler always chose for his own stubborn opinion, such as the small manpower in North Africa and the placement of tanks to guard the Normandy cities in stead of the beaches around the time of D-Day. By July of 1944, Rommel claimed that the Führer had lost all sense and that the war effort was futile. He would have rather seen the Americans walse into Berlin than the Soviets. Early July, one of the conspirators against Hitler arrived at Rommel's HQ in France and explained the situation to Rommel's chief of staff Hans Speidel, who in turn informed Rommel himself. Both men decided not to take part in this plot but did want the Führer eliminated so that Germany and its people would be saved from a horrible faith. On July 15, Rommel typed a letter to Hitler in which he stated that the end was near and that the Führer should draw his conclusions from the current situation. Rommel knew very well that there was nobody else qualified and skilled enough to take Hitler's place. On July 17, Rommel had several talks with trustees such as Heinrich Eberbach, a tank general that had a special bond with Rommel. He heard Rommel say that the only way to end the war was if the Führer and those close to him would be eliminated. A few weeks later, Eberbach was caught by the Brits and informed his fellow prisoners about this conversation while the Brits were listening in. They had made Rommel a high-priority target and almost killed him on July 17, when he was being driven back to his HQ and RAF planes attacked his car. He was injured and hospitalised when Hitler survived the bomb attack on July 20 and even wrote a letter to his wife on July 24 stating that he was shocked to hear the news of a bomb attack and that God had to be thanked that it had ended so well. Of course, this was just a PR stunt as well as an insurance to save his family. Hundreds of suspects were dragged in front of the Volksgericht or People's Court to be trialed. Many of them had been beaten or tortured and Hans Speidel was one of them. He confessed to the Gestapo that both him and Rommel had been made aware of the plans to bomb Hitler, leaving both their faiths in the hands of the Ehrenhof in September. This was an elite group of officers who had to decide whether Speidel would be punished or Rommel. However, most of these men were enemies of Rommel such as Heinrich Kirchheim, an ex-general who had been insulted as a coward by Rommel in North Africa. Rommel's recklessness and individualism had always been a thorn in the eye of other leaders and officers, so it backfired on his reputation which was far greater than the truth according to his haters. The Ehrenhof put all the responsibility on Rommel and one month later, on October 14, Burgdorf and Maisel drove to Rommel's home and gave him the choice between cyanide suicide or a shameful public trial. The Nazis wanted to keep the truth hidden and offered Rommel a chance to save his own wife and son. Less than one hour later, Rommel took the cyanide capsule on a hill just outside of his home town. He was buried with full military respects, even though the funeral was a sort of theatrical show.
