The Legend of Zelda (NES) Retrospective: https://youtu.be/CZztqEOaTmc

Despite how prolific Zelda is, games that fall outside of its mainline series have a tendency to become obscure, even ones that fall within main gameplay styles, like Gamecube’s Four Swords Adventures, but even more so for the odd ones- the CDi games are more known for Youtube Poops than being games, for as good as Crossbow Training is, it’s essentially forgotten because it was a gimmicky title meant to see a plastic* gun, but perhaps the most obscure is BS The Legend of Zelda for the Satellaview. You may be wondering- the what now? The Satellaview was a Japanese-Exclusive add-on for the Super Nintendo that was developed by St. Giga, a now-defunct Satellite Radio company, which came out in 1995- barely a year before the N64, and would run its service until 2000- well beyond the SNES’ lifespan. The Satellaview was quite possibly gaming’s first digital storefront, in a roundabout way, allowing subscribers to download games onto a cartridge the add-on came with, and then turning those games into timed event- they could only be played during a specified window, and were accompanied by live audio- voiceover and music. This has led to some interesting issues in preserving these titles, while many have been saved, others are fully lost, and even the ones that are saved need to be reworked into odd romhacks to restore some of the functionality without the live audio, obviously. That all brings me back to Zelda, with an excessive amount of background- BS The Legend of Zelda is a remake, with a lot of liberties, of The Legend of Zelda for the NES, with a greatly condensed map, some new features and gimmicks, and new dungeons, and was broadcast week to week throughout August of 1995, then its Second Quest was aired throughout December a few months later, as a play on the original game’s more challenging second quest, and lives on through romhacks and restoration patches that get it close enough to how it once was.
