Notes: the Claymore’s damage has finally overtaken that of the Astora’s Straight Sword, so we will be switching to pure Claymore use for the time being. Lower Undead Burg is a fairly short and simple area, and the Claymore’s trust attack allows us to kill two enemies who were hiding behind doors. I’d advise against fighting the boss right away, instead it’s better to open the shortcut back to Firelink. At the same time you will get access to one of the most important merchants in the game. She will sell you Purple Moss and Blooming Purple Moss [the scarecrow enemies in Darkroot can also drop these items], and you will want a fair amount of both before you enter Blighttown. Purple Moss cures Poison, and you will probably want to have some on hand before you enter the Depths as the rats can inflict this. Blooming Purple Moss cures “Toxic”, which is a worse form of Poison that you’ll encounter in Blighttown.

The boss of Lower Undead Burg can be a wall for new players for several reasons. It hits really hard, it has two dogs in the room with it which will easily stagger you if you don't have good poise. This boss is the reason for getting the armor set and Wolf Ring in the previous video. A weapon with a trust attack such as the Claymore or Halberd is recommended as this will make it easier to deal with the dogs once you’re at the top of the stairs. But this boss is actually optional if you've got the master key so if it’s too difficult ATM you can come back to it later. I don’t recommend this though, as beating this boss will give you access to the Depths, which contains some extremely useful items and is also a good farming spot for humanity. Also, defeating Capra will cause Petrus’s adventuring party to appear at Firelink, and this group’s questline is important for obtaining certain Miracles later in the game. You want to make sure you exhaust all of their dialogue to progress this quest to the next stage.

The Depths are a much more complicated area, it’s layout is a multi-story maze and it contains a variety of hazards that you should prepare for before you enter. You will want to have the Rusted Iron Ring, which prevents you from being slowed down while wading through deep water. This ring is obtained in Undead Assylum as shown in part 3 of this series. While you’re in the Asylum you should also trade one of the Cracked Red Eye Orbs that were acquired in the first video to obtain two Purging Stones, you can see how to do this in part 3 and part 8. In the Depths you will find a lizard-like enemy with huge eyes that will not attack directly but will breath a gas. Standing in this gas for too long will inflict Curse, which will instantly kill you and lock your health to half it’s maximum when you respawn. This condition can be cured using a Purging Stone. I’d suggest obtaining the Cursebite Ring [which slows the build-up of Curse thus reducing the chance that you will be afflicted] before entering the Depths, but it requires another suicide run into New Londo. This is actually convenient because you want to make sure that you’re in hollow form rather than human form before you enter the Depths, so a suicide may actually be advised if you’re currently in human form. A more in depth guide to New Londo will be provided in part 8.

Your first priority upon entering the Depths should be to obtain the Ember, which you’ll want to give to Andre [the blacksmith], although I forgot to do this at the end of the video. Once you have the Ember drop down the shaft to get the Spider Shield. This shield grants bonus resistance against Poison and Toxic and will be useful to you in Blighttown. I don’t advise trying to fight the ultra-giant rat [we’ll deal with him later], but drop down the slope into the sewer. This is a place where you can get invaded by a hostile NPC called Kirk if you’re in human form, but you’ll end up fighting him and three giant rats simultaneously. This is the reason for being in hollow form when you enter the depths; you cannot be invaded if you’re hollow. If you can fight through the rats you’ll find the shortcut to the Bonfire. If you took a different route through the Depths you may have found the Bonfire before you opened the shortcut. Either way, you do not want to restore your humanity until after you’ve opened the shortcut, which will allow you to enter Kirk’s invasion corridor from the other end. This makes it easier to kill all the rats before his invasion triggers, and therefore you can fight him one on one which is much safer. If all of this sound too complicated then don’t worry about it. Just remain in hollow form throughout your entire time in the depths and it will make no difference. Kirk’s invasion is completely optional and the only reason to fight him is that he tends to drop a lot of souls.
