Build for New Players | Part 4: Darkroot, Havel, and the Moonlight Butterfly
Notes: if you don’t yet have the Lightning Spear Miracle you may wish to skip the boss of this area for now as it’s quite difficult to beat without a strong ranged option. Your reward for beating it is the Divine Ember, which you should give to Andre so that he can further upgrade your weapon, but you don’t have the materials needed to use the ember yet. The most important items to get are the Elite Armor Set, the Wolf Ring, and Havel’s Ring. If you try to equip the armor, you may find that you roll slowly because it’s too heavy. Havel’s Ring alleviates this, but isn’t easy to get as you have to kill Havel himself. The Wolf Ring is not often used by beginners because the game does not explain Poise, which is the mechanic that it effects. Poise is a stat that determines how easy/difficult it is for you to get Staggered [AKA stunlocked] by damage that you take. Wearing armor boosts your Poise, but so does this ring. Therefore the Wolf Ring is essentially extra armor. High Poise is recommended when fighting the boss of Lower Undead Burg [which will be in the next video], so I like to grab all this stuff before going down there.
Havel is a difficult fight but possible as long as your shield is decent. There’s no point wearing armor during this fight as his weapon will do so much damage that it will one hit kill you no matter what. Instead it’s better to be able to move fast and dodge his attacks. Rely on backstabs, don’t anticipate, and don’t get greedy! Additionally, the Astora’s Straight Sword probably wasn’t the best option for me to use because only half of it’s damage is Physical while the rest is Magic. Havel’s armor has high defence against Magic, so I probably could have killed him a lot more quickly if I had used the +5 Claymore instead.
