Cadaver is an isometric 3D adventure, produced by Image Works, an released by the Bitmap Brothers in 1990. We control a dwarf seeking treasure in a castle, starting from the basement. With lots of puzzles, traps, and monsters to shoot; this classic is well remembered on the Amiga.

Cadaver, pronounced Cuh dav er, is a game I had a copy of back in the day, with no idea of the keys, the controls, or how to play it. I remember throwing the rope down the hole, and lobbing the 6 gems into the pool, but not sure how much further I ever got with it. The game has been on the list for a long time, but each time I tried to record it, I either got stuck, or something happened whereby the video was corrupt for something. So this is perhaps the third time of trying.

While playing the game, I tried to work things out for myself, but I had to watch a longplay to discover the trick with the holy water and the bowl, as I was completely stuck. I also noticed the longplayer also collected the red armour items in the armoury room, so I did the same. It's good that we have some kind of resource to use to get past some tricky puzzles. The controls were also a mystery at first, but by the end of exploring, I'd discovered a few tricks with selecting the items, like pulling left and right to swap wielded items.

Most of the edits involved cutting out big chunks of footage of me wandering around. I just made sure that the rooms I went back to seamlessly cut into the rooms I had visited previously, so the footage was a constant walk from one puzzle to the next.

Danscore:
Cadaver had all of the AAA quality you would expect from the Bitmap Brothers, with well drawn graphics and atmospheric music and sound effects. But some of the puzzles dont make too much sense. For example, with other adventures, the player would tie the rope to a post or rock, and lower themselves into the pit. But with this game, you can't just have the rope in your hand, you have to throw it down the hole, which seems odd. Most players will only see the first level; which is rather drab and grey, and the game could have done with an easier time through the first level, perhaps with a list of objectives, or a character you can return to if you get stuck. With 4 huge levels on offer, and 4 more on the data disk, there is plenty here for the adventurer. Collision detection can be rather hit or miss, and if you dont feed the prisoner with the right items, the player wont be able to find out the first number of the exit door combination: which is what happened to me during my first try. The game feels a bit like Lord of the Rings in Moria, and a combination of Hero Quest and Rogue, which is never a bad thing. Selecting items from the inventory can seem a bit fiddly at first, and dropping items into water for them to be lost forever is unfortunate. As is lobbing a spell when you wanted to read it. Overall, a solid game with a few niggling flaws, and I'm sure adventurers out there still have fond memories of it, even today. So I give this 8 out of 10.
