call a friend
Having soundly beaten Elden Ring with zero help from summons (well, if you ignore my extremely liberal use of Mimic Tear and Black Knife Tiche), and having fully been bitten by the Soulsborne bug, I went into Demon's Souls a bit too confident. of my skills. I mean, I beat Malenia and pre-nerf Radahn in less than 5 tries, I told myself.
Phalanx, the first Demon's Souls boss, only served to heighten that confidence. But hoo boy, what followed later with Tower Knight, the second boss, was a level of hair-tearing, controller-smashing frustration I hadn't endured since I tried piloting that biplane in GTA V.
Look, I'm not against hard games or bosses. I didn't know about the Valkyries when I played God of War 2018 the first time on my PS4 Pro, so when the PS5 arrived, the first thing I did was make a beeline for them. had to turn down the difficulty for Sigrun but hey, we did it.
I'm also not against, and actually respect, games that don't hold your hand, as evidenced by the embarassing number of gleeful hours I spent lost in Elden Ring.
What drove me up the wall in Demon's Souls is the loooooooong walk of shame you have to do before the game deems you worthy of meeting the boss. By the time you reach them, you are already spent, wiped from the effort it took you to get there.
How is this fun? This is not a test of skill, more a test of patience and just how much you're willing to take. This isn't for me.
So I called up the friend who suggested I pick up DeS immediately after ER and asked him for a lil help. Here's how that went.
