Black Ops 2 was released in 2012 and is the 9th mainline entry in the franchise. The first game in the franchise to step into the future era and the only game in the franchise to be set in a futuristic setting but not feature boost jumping as a mechanic until the release of Black Ops 4 in 2018. This is the first game to introduce mechanics like the pick 10 system, Scorestreaks, weapon prestige and the ability to equip a knife as a standalone weapon. It even made strides to reinvent the campaign and zombies mode as well. This was the first COD title to use unlock tokens for create-a-class as it replaced the COD Points system of the original Black Ops.

The maps take the same elements featured in the original Black Ops maps and expands upon them. Visual and dynamic map elements are much more pronounced compared to BO. Wager match map variations were dropped altogether as well as wager matches didn't make a return.

The first game to implement a proper season pass for their DLC packs (not including MW3 Elite Memberships which gave access to MW3 DLC.)

This was the first game to implement an emblem editor.

BO2 was the first game t feature a League play matchmaking into the game.

Black Ops 2 was the first game to feature a mastery camo for classes.
