Looking back over the last few years, I realize (somewhat to my surprise) that the recent Call of Duty singleplayer campaigns have actually been quite decent. Black Ops III (2015), Infinite Warfare (2016) and WWII (2017) were all rather enjoyable - as far as heavily scripted military shooters go - and certainly more engaging and memorable than the 2011-2014 campaigns of Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops II and Advanced Warfare (I didn't play Ghosts at all due to poor reviews). As my previous video shows, I still struggle with the actual gameplay within this subgenre, but the set pieces and production values can provide a nice enough experience despite my inadequate reflexes for twitch-heavy FPSs.

Modern Warfare 2019 is yet another solid outing for this supposedly somewhat struggling franchise, despite the acute identity crisis inherent in effectively rebooting the franchise twice (first with WWII and now MW all over again). The revamped graphics engine might not impress compared with the likes of Metro Exodus (although there is RTX support this time around), but the material work is really sharp and the sound design is right up there with Battlefield's expertly tuned cacophony of war. While we've been rushing through the same kind of third world warzones for the better part of 20 years now, there's at least a sense that Call of Duty has never been better at immersing the player in its own highly tendentious take on modern conflicts than this.
