In August 1942, Private Miller and his team are captured by the Japanese during the Makin Atoll raid. Corporal Roebuck, Sergeant Sullivan and a squad of Marine Raiders are sent to rescue the POWs. Upon being rescued, Miller and the Marines must destroy a Japanese ammunition depot and extract from the island.
The Raid on Makin Island (17–18 August 1942) was an attack by the United States Marine Corps Raiders on Japanese military forces on Makin Island in the Pacific Ocean. The raid was among the earliest American offensive ground combat operations of World War II. The aim was to destroy Imperial Japanese installations, take prisoners, gain intelligence on the Gilbert Islands area, and divert Japanese attention and reinforcements from the Allied landings on Guadalcanal. Only the first of these objectives were achieved, but the raid did boost morale and provide a test for Raider tactics.
The Marine Raiders were special operations forces established during World War II to conduct amphibious light infantry warfare, and were the first United States special operations forces to form and see combat during World War II. Despite the original intent for Raiders to serve in a special operations capacity, most Raiders were employed as conventional infantry. This, combined with the resentment within the rest of the Marine Corps that the Raiders were an "elite force within an elite force", led to the original Raider units being disbanded. The changing nature of the war in the Pacific, with many large-scale amphibious assaults to come against well-defended islands, negated the requirements for small light units that could strike deep into enemy territory.
Gameplay set to Hardened difficulty mode. Footage captured on Xbox 360.
