Call of Duty®: Warzone - Free
The lobby is full, everyone is warmed up and ready for the fight, and the mode of your choice begins.
You selected a mode in the Play menu prior to entering the Warzone in-game lobby; here is what you should expect after the screen fades to black for the start of your Warzone match.
Massive and Tactical: Battle Royale Overview
You and your fireteam, totaling three players – unless you decided not to fill your squad at the Play menu – start on the infill plane ready to jump out over Verdansk. After the plane crosses a section of the area as marked by your Tac Map, the rear loading ramp drops down, allowing your squad to drop out and parachute down to safety.
At the beginning of a Battle Royale game, the Tac Map shows the first safe area; while you could land anywhere in Verdansk, the circle collapse will shrink the playable area over time, causing those outsides of it to eventually succumb to the gas.
Once you hit the ground, your squad’s objective is to survive longer than up to 49 other three-person squads in Verdansk. Looting items, killing enemies, and completing Contracts all help you outlast the competition.
After a few minutes into the match, the first circle collapse begins, then another cycle starts once the first collapse is complete. You can see how much time is left until the next collapse – or when the current one is over – under the mini Tac Map on the HUD, and you can see where it will collapse on the Tac Map itself.
When your Operator drops to zero health, they enter a downed state and bleed out. You must either be revived by a teammate or use a redeploy token to keep your inventory and continue fighting. Otherwise, upon your first death, you will be captured as a “Prisoner of Warzone” and fight in the Gulag. The Gulag is a separate area within the Zordaya Prison Complex.
Winning your Gulag fight gets you back into the game via redeployment. Losing a Gulag fight or dying after being brought back into the match from a Gulag victory, eliminates you from play, although there are ways to still redeploy even after elimination. A fireteam is fully eliminated with no chance to redeploy after all its members are dead and eliminated.
The game ends when only one fireteam – or part of a fireteam – is left standing. Although the circle collapse can (and will) engulf the entirety of Verdansk, the game does not end until one team is deemed victorious.
Battle Royale Strategies
As mentioned in the Play section of this guide, successful Battle Royale games are ones where fireteams work together and communicate often. What is this like in practice?
Agreement on the LZ: Landing together as a squad in an agreed-upon location.
Three’s Not a Crowd: A squad that lands together survive together. Splitting up the party rarely leads to success, as squads that decided to move as one unit will, more often than not, slaughter lone wolves.
Pinging and Calling: Pinging and using verbal callouts to point out loot locations, enemy movements, or strategies for traveling across Verdansk.
Just Pinging: Even if you don’t have a microphone, using the ping function can allow you to communicate with your squadmates.
No-one Left Behind: Ensuring that all squad members are in the vehicle, or have another ride when leaving an area.
Be a Team Player: Ensure you place the benefit of your squad above your individual advantages. Leave no person in your party behind… or they may not want to go for the revive when you go down.
Don’t Back Down (or Back Out): Not backing out of the game once you’ve been eliminated, which would put your fireteam down an Operator down for the rest of the match.
Sharing is Caring: Sharing loot with one another to maximize utility and synergy with everyone’s skillsets. Remember the part of the Tutorial about sharing ammo? That’s extremely important. Don’t be an ammo hog.
Revive and Stay Alive: Reviving squadmates who have been downed due to a firefight. Sharing and reviving are two of the most important parts of teamwork, which is why they are highlighted within the initial tutorial.
No Hoarding: Dropping additional or unnecessary ammo that your Operator currently has for a squadmate can keep them stocked up for the weapon of their choosing.
Weapon Specialization: Or, when it comes to picking up weapons, leaving a weapon for a squadmate who is more proficient with it could eventually lead to more success down the line.
