Can a B-1 Lancer Gunship Be Built?
Well, in order to turn the B-1B Lancer into a B-1B gunship with capabilities equivalent to the AC-130J Ghostrider, which America at the moment depends on, Boeing published patent applications for a number of different cannon attachment options in 2018. The maximum speed for C-130-based gunships, which can fire a tremendous quantity of ammo at a target, is less than half that of a B-1 Lancer bomber. Could we possibly create a B-1B gunship to retain this renowned aircraft in service after the U.S. Air Force recently revealed its intentions to start retiring its fleet of B-1Bs in favor of the B-21 Raider? It is conceivable, but there are a few important restrictions as well. The B-1B Lancer can fly more controllably at lower speeds thanks to its swing-wing configuration, but it would be difficult for it to fly as slowly as an AC-130J while striking targets below. A B-1B gunship, on the other hand, would be costly to operate, making it a significantly more expensive answer to a problem the U.S. has already handled, but this doesn't mean the notion won't ever be implemented.
