When F-4 Phantom II Was First Used In Combat Over Vietnam In 1965 #shorts
On April 10, 1965, the F-4 Phantom II from the US Navy's Fighter Squadron VF-96, operating from the aircraft carrier USS Ranger CV-61, scored the first air-to-air victories for the United States Navy, as well as the United States of America. But it was for the Navy, what about the US Air Force and Marine Corps? Well, just 3 months later, on July 10th, 1965, F-4Cs on temporary assignment in Ubon, Thailand, scored the USAF's first victories against North Vietnamese MiG-17s using the AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missile. During this aerial engagement, the US aircrew brought down two North Vietnamese MiG-17 fighter jets. The US Air Force, US Navy, and US Marine Corps all deployed versions of the F-4 during the Vietnam War. Though the U.S. Marine Corps' first operational deployment of the F-4 Phantom II was during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, their first use in combat is unknown, at least to me for now, but what is confirmed is that the Marine Corps also used the F-4Bs for the first time in combat during the Vietnam War, and brought down three enemy MiGs.
