Capcom's 1943: The Battle of Midway for NES #videogame #gaming
1943: The Battle of Midway, an excellent vertical shooter from Capcom. While the home version of its predecessor, 1942, was outsourced to Micronics was rather lackluster, 1943 is an incredibly fun arcade experience, developed in-house by Capcom themselves.
The World War II setting is a bit surprising, considering you play as an American pilot fighting against what is clearly the Japanese Imperial Army. Given that this was a Japanese-made game, it's amusing that they chose to make themselves the antagonists.
1943 is absolutely not realistic, but it prioritizes fun above all else. In addition to your standard shot, you can charge up a powerful energy blast by holding down the B button. Pressing A unleashes a loop-de-loop maneuver, consuming a bit of energy but filling the screen with lightning and wiping out all on-screen enemies.
The game features hidden items and power-ups, and you'll eventually descend to engage in epic battles against battleships and other formidable foes.
1943 also saw releases on various platforms, including the NEC PC Engine and SuperGrafx. You might notice I'm using a turbo controller. So sue me β people did this back in the day!
1943: The Battle of Midway is highly regarded by shmup fans to this day, and it's an absolutely essential Capcom title.
