Today we’re covering Captain Beeble, a side-scrolling shooter for the Atari 400 and 800 8-bit computers from Canadian developer Inhome Software.

Captain Beeble is a tough game with a goofy name. Each stage is an obstacle course of increasing danger filled with deadly bugs and obstacles, giving you only a short time to fly your jetpac to the end, grab a crystal, and fly back to your CPU before your fuel runs out. The bugs you can shoot, but anything else of a similar color is deadly and can only be avoided. In later levels, this includes all of a stage’s walls and ceilings.

It’s a solid concept for an arcade style action game where reaction time and reflexes are king - you’ll need to be very good to make it past the first few levels, and your jet pack doesn’t exactly stop on a dime. While it doesn’t stand up to its arcade contemporaries, it makes good use of the Atari 8-bit’s graphic capabilities.

As far as the sound goes I’d say much of the same - there’s no music, but the sound effects aren’t grating and they suit the genre.

The difficulty is punishing though. I don’t think I’ve ever made it past the third level - not exactly unfair, but if it were a little more fun to play I’d probably give it a higher rating. As it is, Captain Beeble gets a solid B - an excellent game for the platform.
