Captain Commando Game Sample - SNES/SFC
Better late than never right? Originally released in Arcades in 1991 as the seventeenth Capcom title to use the CP System hardware, this brawler wasn't ported to the SNES until 1995... while Capcom ported several games to the system in an untimely fashion, Captain Commando is perhaps the worst offender overall (and it was also ported to the Playstation in 1998 and several Capcom compilations). It is an acceptable port of the Arcade game given the hardware limitations of the SNES (two players instead of four, no robots to ride, etc.), but Capcom could've at least improved the framerate and audio quality for crying out loud. While this wasn't the greatest brawler to begin with, at least its of a respectable length and the stages are detailed (and you can defeat women, so it ironically didn't go through the censorship SNES Final Fight did).
In the year 2026 and Playing as (Cap)tain (Com)mando and his three faithful Commando Companions (Mack the Knife, Ginzu the Ninja, and Baby Head), you are to protect the Galaxy from a gang of super-powered criminals lead by Scumocide (otherwise known as "Genocide"). The gameplay is similar to early Final Fight titles, but broader in scope with more levels, greater level variety, and the ability to take weapons between screens until the stage is completed (and the arcade game expands a bit more in this department with robots and four players). Characters have basic combos as well as dashing attacks, aerial attacks, and a special or "Joy" attack which hits surrounding foes for the cost of a little health.
The soundtrack is only so-so IMO with really repetitive boss music and no tunes barring perhaps the first level that I would consider memorable. The graphics and animation were good for their time, but surpassed by many SNES beat-em-ups by the time CC was finally ported to the SNES. The SNES game is considerably easier than the arcade game. Something to note is that Captain Commando was around far before he ever appeared in his own game, appearing as a special spokesman in Capcom products since the mid 80s. This is a video of the game in action. Enjoy.
