Cargo - Movie Review
"Cargo" (2017) directed by Ben Howling & Yolanda Ramke is an Australian horror zombie film. It is also a Netflix Original and in my opinion is one of the worst on the platform, however it does have a pretty fantastic final ten minutes.
Andy (Martin Freeman) and his wife are living in a post-pandemic world, with aggressive infected humans roaming the lands. They are living on a house boat as they believe living on the water is safer, but are running out of food and supplies. Andy's wife gets infected and turns, leaving Andy by himself. Andy also becomes infected and is now tasked with finding a suitable place for his infant daughter to live after he is gone.
Cargo is an awkward one to review because I absolutely loved the ending but hated almost everything else. This is one of the most boring horror films I've ever seen and does not do anything unique to re-invent the zombie movie formula. There are zero scares whatsoever start to finish. Unfortunately this is primarily a drama film where nothing is fleshed out and you won't find yourself particularly invested.
The ending is definitely incredible though and deserves praise. I imagine it skewed a lot of people's ratings when judging this film because of how good the final 10 minutes are. But for me, there is a another hour and some minutes of run time filler content to get to that point and I found basically nothing of value in the rest of this time. Since both protagonists become immediately infected at the beginning, zombies are not an actual threat anymore and instead our main antagonist is this random racist guy Andy bumps into.
Cargo is not worth the watch, at all. Another trash Netflix Original bites the dust.
