"Enola Holmes" (2020) directed by Harry Bradbeer is a feminist film which is mostly good but a little bit difficult to get truly invested in. I really like the cast so they ultimately make the watch worth it.

Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) has just turned 16 and has awoken to her mother Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter) abruptly disappearing. Enola lives in a time period where women are expected to be a certain way but her mother has raised her single handedly in a non-conforming independently strong manner. Enola looks to her brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill) for aid but he and his brother Mycroft (Sam Claflin) are more concerned with giving her a "proper" future which does not interest her. Enola starts a journey to locate her mother and runs into a boy who is on the run from his high status family named Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge).

Enola Holmes has great lead actors in Millie Bobby Brown & Henry Cavill. These two are honestly one of the only positive things about this film to me, but it's an extreme positive because Millie is so likeable, and I liked her fourth wall breaking narration as well which is uncommon for me since I usually don't prefer that method of storytelling. Henry Cavill is very serious in this but even he gets a moment to lighten up and I greatly respected his performance here. Sometimes feminist films can be annoying because they can't help themselves but to take a dump on half of the world's population, but this one is time period accurate and done fairly well.

I find the plot of Enola looking for her mother a tad bit uninteresting if I'm being honest. It might be because we learn her mother is an extremist terrorist and so it makes me like her a lot less and not want to find her. Enola's name spelled backwards is Alone after all, and really that's when she's at her best. On that same note, the love interest for her was pretty laughable and kind of contradicts the film's pro-feminist independent woman message.

Enola Holmes is pretty vanilla and easy to appreciate. It's not the most interesting thing Netflix has ever put out, but the cast hold it up.
