95This is my arrangement of Hiroyuki Iwatski's "Carson City," the theme from the first stage of Nastume's 1994 SNES game Wild Guns. It was written entirely in Famitracker for native playback on NES hardware, and it uses the Konami VRC6 enhancement chip.
Iwatsuki's music generally isn't as well recognized or as highly regarded as some of his contemporaries (Koshiro, Kondo, Mastumae, Kodaka, et al), but that's not for its lack of quality. The guy is a frickin' genius, I swear. Listen to any of his 8 or 16-bit Natsume soundtracks and I'm confident you'll quickly see what I mean.
Wild Guns is right up there with his best, so I do hope that I managed to do justice to this track. I went with a song from Wild Guns because I thought it might be interesting to try a song that would benefit from slightly softer-edged instruments than you typically hear on NES games (to keep with the spaghetti western theme - no distortion guitar or orchestra hits here!), and I challenged myself to completely avoid using any samples on this one: the drums and the cymbals are all played through the noise channel. The harmonies in this song are great, and overall, I really enjoyed putting it together.
