Turbo OutRun (Arcade) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

Turbo OutRun is the direct arcade sequel to Sega AM2's 1986 classic OutRun. The original game is well known for its "super scalar" graphics that simulated 3D by quickly scaling heavily layered 2D sprites, its iconic soundtrack, and its branching course design.
This sequel isn't the revelation that the first game was, but blazing about in your cherry red Ferrari is as fast-paced and as exciting as it ever was. The branching paths and the selectable radio stations are now gone, but the new theme, car upgrades, and the addition of the titular turbo feature help things feel fresh.
Instead of tearing up vaguely European motorways, Turbo OutRun now has you cruisin' the USA. Beginning in New York and ending in Los Angeles, you race across 16 tracks that are all themed by city or area, and you are given a rival this time as well - that douchebag in the white Porsche will do his utmost to steal your girl. If he hits the checkpoints ahead of you, she'll run off with him, your million point bonus, and your dignity. Oof.
Turbo OutRun plays just as well as OutRun, especially with a steering wheel, and it looks great given that it was running on an aging hardware platform. The weather effects are a bit cheesy (what is with that rain?), the city themes can be lame (why does Dallas look like Morocco?), and the comparative lack of courses do drive down its replayability a bit, but it still feels like OutRun, and it's still a blast to play. For me, that's enough reason to keep it around.
