Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin Playthrough (Direct DS Capture) - Part 1
This is part 1 of my capture of me playing through Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin for the DS. This is not an emulator. This footage was captured directly from my New 3DS XL using the aftermarket capture kit manufactured by Katsukity and installed/sold by Merki. I’m playing on normal difficulty.
It’s October, so I’m once again celebrating the month of Halloween with some horror-themed games. To kick off this year’s October celebration, I’m starting with Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.
I purchased this game on its release date in 2006 because of the awesome preorder bonus that GameStop was offering, but when I arrived to pick up my game, the store didn't have the bonus. That was without a doubt the biggest disappointment from any of my game purchases. I later bought the preorder bonus off eBay.
Portrait of Ruin is designed in the same basic Metroidvania style as Dawn of Sorrow and the preceding Game Boy Advance titles, but it has some small innovations with its dual-character setup and the use of paintings. Story wise, this game acts as a sequel to the Sega Genesis title Castlevania: Bloodlines.
Although I enjoy this game, I don’t have much of an opinion about it, so there isn’t much for me to say. I suppose that Dawn of Sorrow may be a better game overall, but I haven’t thought too much about it.
This game originally had an online multiplayer mode that allowed you to do a boss rush with another person. I tried the mode a few times back in the day but I was never able to complete it. The DS’s Wi-Fi Connection was then shutdown in 2014, making it impossible to play the multiplayer mode again.
I’ll be trying to find all sorts of secrets and special weapons and armor during this playthrough, but I might miss some things here and there. Several items are inconsequential though, so it doesn’t really matter.
In this first part I started a new save file, headed to the City of Haze, and obtained the Lizard Tail relic, which gave me the slide ability, as well as the Acrobat Cube, which allows me to jump off my partner’s shoulders.
