Cave Engine by Uniday Studios is a free full functioning 3D game engine with an full editor environment. It is completely scriptable using the Python programming language, with a fast C++ codebase on the back end. It hands asset importing, rendering, particles, PBR materials, animations and more. Also... and this one can be a bit shocking... it has good documentation! Sadly the editor is only available for download for the Windows platform, although it may work on Linux using WINE.
