Ink is a programming language, or more accurately a piece of middleware and entire ecosystem, use to create the narrative side of your game. If you need to have branching dialogs, variables and game engine integration, Ink could be a good choice for you. In addition to the Ink language, there is also the Inky IDE for creating game dialog, as well as several other tools and options for write the contents of your game world.
There are also plugins for most popular programming languages like C#, C++, Rust, Haxe and more as well as game engine integrations for Godot, Unity, and now Unreal Engine 5.3 thanks to The Chinese Room, who just released Inkpot.

The entire ecosystem is completely free and open source, generally under the MIT license. The Inky IDE runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, while plugins for Visual Studio Code, Atom Editor, Emacs and more also exist.

If Ink isn't your thing, you can also check out Twine that we covered earlier.
