Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Captain Chang Plays... 688 (I) Hunter/Killer
In the previous episode, we kept the sea lanes open in the Strait of Hormuz by removing two submarines that may have mined the area, and located the minefield.
Campaign Mission 10: Duck in a Shooting Gallery
We penetrated further into the gulf in very shallow waters (under 200 ft) as we have been ordered to let our SEALs out to play... a certain oil platform was very naughty... It hosted some gunships that were strafing neutral shipping. SEALs will... demolish it. However, watch out for the Iranian navy in the area, and they have ASW helos.
We headed north and downloaded the latest intel. We were to let the SEALs out to play within 2 nm of the platform. It's to our west, in even shallower waters. There are some neutral shipping all around, at least one Helix ASW helo, and what appears to be two Iranian navy ships.
(NOTE: If you read the objectives, there are two Iranian ships, a Koni and a Kotor. )
We turned northwest to ascertain which ship is which. Eventually, we figured out the northwestern ship is Koni, so the southwestern ship is the Kotor. Koni requires two torpedos, so we sent two torpedoes that way. Halfway there, we got calls of torpedoes in the water, so we turned south and ran at best non-cavitation speed. It was enough, as the new prop gave us 18 kt at 160 ft. We later heard explosions. (Later analysis showed that two neutral ships were destroyed)
We fired a torpedo toward the southwest to chase after the Kotor, but the shallowness messed up the sonar. The torpedo failed to acquire and somehow ran out of endurance when it finally caught a scent. Another torpedo is sent but the range kept fluctuating so it never really caught on. A third torpedo finally caught the Kotor after it got within 15000 yds.
We then approached the launch point at our best speed, at 120 ft deep, until we were within 1 nm, then came to 60 ft and slowed to 5 kt, then finally all stop. And the SEAL team is away in 90 seconds. 15 minutes later, we heard a loud kaboom that came from the platform. The return trip took a lot less time. They scuttled most of their equipment and swam onboard, scuttling the zodiac as well. We noted that the Helixes did not approach the platform so we judged it safe enough to send the mission end report from there.
Boss Newton was quite pleased and showed our mission report to the admiral.
We got 1100 pts, max possible, as we sank both Kotor and Koni, plus destroyed the platform, dropped and picked up the SEAL team.
We have one more mission here. Clearly, we are not quite done here against the Iranian navy...
