Chainsaws, Zombie Mountains And The Best And Worst World War Z Features
The World War Z game releases on April 16 and we’ve had early access to test chainsaws against zombie mountains. There’s no Brad Pitt in this Left 4 Dead take on the World War Z, but there’s plenty of weapons, classes and upgrades to give the game its own feel compared to Valve’s classic. We take a trip through one complete level and explore the best and worst World War Z features. (This is Xbox World War Z - PC code wasn’t available to test.)
This isn’t a full World War Z review, but a quick World War Z test - we were able to try the game at an event last week and chat to the team about how the action differs to Left 4 Dead and other zombie shooters. Because let’s not beat around the bush: this game is very similar to Left 4 Dead. Sure, it has the vast zombie horde and a third-person perspective, but it borrows the special zombie types and taps into the same part of the brain that kept us alive back in 2007. Our full World War Z game review will see if the game differentiates itself in the long run, but these impressions should give you an idea of what to expect. And you can’t go wrong with a World War Z chainsaw. Vroom! (Is that the noise a chainsaw makes?)
The World War Z game release is tomorrow (April 16), so expect the World War Z game review embargo to break soon after that - we are waiting for the game to activate online before testing it properly. You can play the game with three AI partners, but the real fun will have to wait for online friends - another thing we need to see how it holds up in our full World War Z test. But for now you can see all the World War Z features in action - how character upgrades work, how weapon customisation can help you, how the difficulty creates new challenges with dynamic item placement and how the zombie siege zones work. Think you can hold off zombies with just a bit of barbed wire and an autoturret? Best of luck.
This is World War Z XBox One - World War Z PS4 should look much the same - but we’ll try and get PC gameplay on the channel as soon as possible. We enjoyed what we played of the World War Z game - it’s a little odd playing an adaptation so long after the film, but the action holds up and it’s been a while since we’ve had a proper co-op slaughter fest to enjoy. Our World War Z early access left us feeling pretty good about the game - it’s a shame that World War Z Steam is not a thing (this is an Epic Game Store exclusive on PC), although that exclusivity deal does mean the game is releasing for a slightly reduced price. That’s something. Is it something enough? Wait for the full Rock Paper Shotgun World War Z review.
I hope you enjoyed this quick tour of zombie-filled New York. Apologies again for the slightly iffy sound on the capture and for my slightly raspy sounds - I’m battling a sore throat. If you have any questions about World War Z pop them in the comments and i’ll do my best to answer them. If you enjoyed this video, why not subscribe to Rock Paper Shotgun for more videos like this? We cover everything on PC, from zombie nightmares to best indie picks of 2019. Check out our playlists for a taste of the channel.
