When Chase H.Q. hit arcades in 1988, it brought a breath of high-octane fresh air to the racing genre. Rather than simply racing for position or time, this game added a crime-fighting twist. Players take on the role of Tony Gibson, a police officer in the "Chase Special Investigation Department," tasked with apprehending criminals in high-speed pursuits across city highways and country roads.

At its core, Chase H.Q. is a racing game with a simple premise: catch up to the criminal’s car and ram it repeatedly until it’s forced to stop. Each level starts with a call from HQ, giving you details of the suspect. You race through traffic, hitting turbo boosts when necessary, and once you make contact with the criminal, the game shifts into a thrilling demolition derby.

The time limit adds tension, and the voiceovers ("This is Nancy at Chase Headquarters") were pretty novel for the era. The gameplay loop is pure arcade magic, easy to pick up, hard to master, and endlessly satisfying when you finally wreck the suspect’s car in the final seconds.

For its time, the graphics were impressive. The scaling road and roadside objects gave a real sense of speed. The enemy cars looked distinct, and your own sleek black Porsche stood out. The sound design particularly the sirens, screeching tires, and synthesized voices added to the urgency and atmosphere.

Chase H.Q. is a timeless arcade classic that blended the thrills of racing with the drama of a police chase. It’s fun, fast-paced, and still enjoyable today especially if you can find it in a retro arcade or emulator.
