Cheers as King's Troop take up residence 07.02.12
The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery take up residence in a new purpose built equestrian training facility and accommodation centre in Woolwich Garrison today. Yesterday they paraded through St John's Wood for the last time, leaving the barracks that has been home since their formation in 1947 by King George VI. The new facilities have been delivered by Defence Infrastructure Organisation, working with industry partner Morgan Sindall. Today they are formally marking their arrival in Woolwich by marching through the newly-declared Royal Borough, before officially marching into the new barracks at Napier Lines. The arrival of the King's Troop builds on links between the military and the borough of Greenwich dating back almost three centuries. The Royal Artillery was founded in 1716; the first barracks for the Artillery were built in 1720 on the Royal Arsenal site; and the construction of new barracks on Woolwich Common took place between 1781-1802.
