For anyone who has served five years or more in the forces, emergency services or prison service, today is the eligible cut off date for the Diamond Jubilee Medal. In all 450 thousand are being awarded, the greatest number for any medal since the end of the First World War. One hundred and fifty-five thousand of the medals will go to members of the armed forces. The Diamond Jubilee medal is being made in the Midlands, using time-honoured techniques. Thirty thousand people have signed an e-petition calling for the government veterans to "change the criteria to include veterans". The medal can't be worn until the official celebrations this June.
