What a freaking cool game. At first I thought this was going to be your typical space flight action sim and I was pleasantly wrong. You do fly around and shoot stuff and go on missions, but this isn't a straight linear level based game. You areas you can explore at your leisure and take on side quests and other mini distractions. There are hidden items in the environment including money and upgrades and you have a scanner of sorts that tells you what is nearby. You can purchase or find new weapons and mods for the ship, you can also upgrade your shields and ships hull at docks. Some equipment even have set bonuses. As you progress in the game you get new abilities. They range from being able to drift and strafe to being able to instantly warp behind enemies. You can also upgrade these said abilities with items found through side quests or just discovering them in the world. Enemies are pretty varied and they all have different ships and attacks. Some just have a hull others have shields or even armor. You have a gatling gun, laser and missiles that can are strong against one specific type. And combat can get intense switching everything around. It's so damn satisfying stringing everything together in combat. The story is a bit silly, you're kind of going on a Darth Vader redemption arc. You blow up[ a planet with billions of people only to find a conscience and try to make amends to the survivors all the while seeking revenge against your former mentor. The voice acting is solid, though you can tell there wasn't much in the budget when it came to having animated NPCs. Most interactions you are staring at static images or just floating ships. The game and environments look nice and are more varied than I would have thought for being in space. The game isn't crazy long and sticks around for just the right amount of time. The worst part is easily the final boss. It is not a fun fight. The developers seemed to have forgotten what made the game so fun and took away all the cool abilities for the final fight. It's not good. Most of the game is packed with cool and unique ideas. The final boss is not one of them. I won't let one fight ruin an otherwise spectacular surprise of a game though. Enjoy my blind playthrough.
