Chrono Trigger (SNES) Part 16: The Black Omen
Time for the final sidequest, and I start using a couple of members that I haven't used as much just to use their end game gear (and gain a few more dual/triple techs in the process)
head to 12,000BC and fly around to meet the Black Omen which has been looming for a while. Destroy the turrets at the entrance then head in to gain more information about Lavos and fight Mega Mutant.
Status can be kind of annoying, so heal it off quick. Otherwise just focus down the top section then the bottom.
The more exposed area is linear, and by the time I reach the interior area I swap Crono back in for Magus but keep Frog a bit longer.
Afew more battles inside and you're in the exposed area again, still on a linear path. You'll come to a teleporter eventually, but heal up before you go through it as you'll have back to back battles on the elevator.
Head inside and take the E path for the way forward and nab the chest before heading up the stairs to the next room, picking up the NW chest before heading through. Head E at the next split for the way forward again and nab the chests in the next room and then nab two more at the N end. I swap Marle in for Ayla for some more tech learning and pass through the next few rooms nabbing chests on the linear way until there's another teleporter.
The next room is pretty much zig-zagging for chests and going around pillars to reach the NW. There's a save point to heal up and then Mega Mutant returns as Giga Mutant. Giga Mutant has more annoying attacks. Including an attack which leaves a character with 1 HP. TO be honest, I would let them die then revive them. The boss does seem to get faster towards the end, but you can nuke it then.
I swap Ayla back in for Frog now to wrap it up with my usual party (plus there's that boss to steal Prism equipment from soon).
There's an elevator and then more of a linear exterior path again.
Inside you'll see a chest and get another save point. Use it and then head N for Tera Mutant. This boss feels a lot easier. The main gimmick is that the top portion will steal HP from the bottom, which wastes a turn to be honest. I start using Luminaire again, which doesn't feel cheap on a boss with this much HP, and Charm with Ayla.
Heal up and head forward for an Elder Lavos Spawn battle.
It isn't significantly stronger than the spawns we fought before but has over double the HP, and a Helm for each part worth charming.
Heal up and then you'll have a boss gauntlet. Don't use up too much MP on Zeal, she isn't that powerful anyway. Charm 2 Megalixirs instead of defeating her for 1. Go all out against the Mammon Machine and then face Zeal in her next form. Charm both hands to get a Prismatic Helm and Dress and then focus on the face - the hands get destroyed when the face does.
Her attacks get more vicious at 50% HP, but with Ayla and Crono doing more than 2.5K damage per turn and Marle healing it's only 4 rounds in this state anyway.
The part ends with the Black Omen sinking as Queen Zeal calls out to Lavos.
Heading to Lavos in this manner, is the only way to access New Game+ So it's definitely recommended to do it this way.
The next part will start with Lavos and wrap the walkthrough up.
