Recap: When Crono walks Marle to Guardia castle, the chancellor accuses him of having abducted her. Despite Marle's protests, Crono is taken prisoner and put on trial for his alleged crimes. The jury finds him innocent, saving him from execution, but the judge orders 3 days of solitary confinement anyway. As the chancellor escorts him to the dungeon, he tacks on the execution himself, and Crono is put in the guillotine. Lucca breaks in and rescues him. Marle, fed up with the castle, joins the two of them on the way out.

Soldiers corner the three in Guardia forest, at a location that just happens to contain a time gate. They don't know what's on the other side, but have no other choice than to travel through and find out. They land in a desolate world of high technology and ruin. People live in domes and have a device called the Enertron, which gives a full night's sleep in a few seconds, but leaves you hungry after use. There's no food anywhere, and everyone is starving.

Journeying across the ruins to a place called Arris Dome, they find a group of people above a food storage facility who are too weak and unhealthy to fight their way through the security robots guarding it. One man had gone down to investigate, but had never returned. Doan, the mayor of the dome, is pleasantly surprised to see Crono's party volunteer to go below and look for the food for them. After fighting through the robots, they find that the refrigeration has failed and all of the food is rotten. On the remains of the man who had gone below, they find some seeds and a note hinting at further secrets beneath the dome.

Following the clues leads them to an info computer. Lucca is able to run a search and find another time gate to the east at a place called Proto Dome. Marle presses a button that plays a recording dated 1999 A.D, titled "Visual record of The Day of Lavos". It shows a giant creature emerging from the ground, raining down destruction on the entire world. Realizing that this is their future, they resolve to do anything they can to stop it and change history.

Doan is surprised to see the party reemerge from the depths, and although they weren't able to bring back any food, they're able to give the people seeds and the hope that they may be able to grow their own someday. Doan gives them the key to a jet bike that they may be able to use to cross the ruins between Arris and Proto domes. As they approach, a cyborg (?) named Johnny shows up and challenges them to a race on an old highway that runs through the ruins.

The highway leads to Proto Dome, where they find a broken-down humanoid robot. Lucca fixes him up, and Crono names him Robo. The gate in Proto Dome is behind a locked door, which can't be opened with the power off. Robo offers to accompany them to the nearby factory where the dome's power generator can be activated for a short time. Lucca stays behind to open the door while the power is on.
