CiB Game Boy Theater - Super Mario Land (Episode 58)
The Original Game Boy is one of the biggest 'game changers' in the history of video games, and essentially ushered in the popularity of handheld games. There are many games that will be classic forever. There are, however, a much, much higher number of simply awful, forgettable, or downright weird games. CiB Game Boy Theater shows you some of the games you might not (and shouldn't be...) familiar with.
Super Mario Land is quite possibly the weirdest Mario game out there. It is the 4th game to come out in the series (in America, after SMB 1, 2, 3 --- I wasn't sure if it came out after 3, it did), and although it's a standard Mario platformer game, it's bizarre.
All things considered, it's a fun, solid title for the Game Boy, especially being an early title. It just does a lot of things... different. There are a lot of things you really never see again in any Mario games: lots of enemies, the complete lack of King Koopa / Bowser, the autoscrolling flying/sub stages. The controls on the game are... well, considering the Game Boy, good, but also very floaty. This is absolutely one of those games that you're always worried about falling in pits --- extra lives necessary.
This is one of those times where we're actually going to finish a game in one sitting on Game Boy Theater, so enjoy. And post below why this game is so, so weird. Thanks for watching!
