CiB Game Boy Theater - All-Star Baseball 99 and Game and Watch Gallery (Episode 60)
The Original Game Boy is one of the biggest 'game changers' in the history of video games, and essentially ushered in the popularity of handheld games. There are many games that will be classic forever. There are, however, a much, much higher number of simply awful, forgettable, or downright weird games. CiB Game Boy Theater shows you some of the games you might not (and shouldn't be...) familiar with.
We hit the 60 episode mark... and we've played at least 5 good games!!!
All-Star Baseball 99... on original Game Boy? Even though this was released in 98, this is a very late release. I'm going to refer back to my analysis of Tecmo Bowl vs NFL Quarterback Club II in Episode 59 --- All-Star Baseball 99 is technically very nice. It has all the teams, all the players, lots of game modes. Heck, even throwing a pitch is a 3-step process. And you know what? It's not nearly as fun as RBI Baseball, a game with like 8 teams, and very limited rosters. More realistic doesn't always mean more fun. Still awesome to see a 1998 release game on here!
Game and Watch Gallery, if you think about it, is a pretty bare-bones cartridge. It has four Game and Watch games (which of course released as stand-alone handhelds before the Game Boy) with both classic and modern versions. It's also not a super early release - it came out in 1997. On the most base level, you might think it is a misuse of a Game Boy cartridge --- the same system that holds all of Zelda: Link's Awakening can only hold four Game and Watch games? Luckily, it is a great, addictive game --- especially 'Fire'. I usually skip the classic versions, but the modern versions are very well made, and fun as all get out. Highly recommended. Thanks for watching!
