CiB Let's Try - Battle Arena Toshinden 3 (PS1)
Battle Arena Toshinden 3 was a PS1 exclusive (no arcade version here, as far as I can tell) that was released on March 31, 1997. It was developed by Tamsoft, a Japanese company that still exists and released a lot of Japan-only games. It was published by Playmates Interactive -- yes, the toy manufacturer Playmates (though LJN was a toy manufacturer, so this was more common than you think).
For what it's worth, Battle Arena Toshinden 1 released in 1995, and 2 released in 1996, so they did release these games annually for the first few.
Toshinden 1 was the first 3D weapons fighter (before even Soul Edge), but being the first at something does not necessarily make you good at it, and Toshinden 3 is not a very good fighting game. We've absolutely played worse, but we've also played many better fighting games on the PS1 -- this was the era after Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat that fighting games were coming out all the time, and Toshinden 3 does nothing to set itself above the others.
Unfortunately, we'll eventually have to play Toshinden 1 and 2 so, I guess there is that to look forward to. Thanks for watching!
