The tactic to use when you get started is the simple wiggle. Pop your chute when you exit the plane, but cut it after a second or so, and change direction while flying. Then activate your parachute again, but make sure you change direction a couple of times too.
Repeat this process almost all the way to your landing zone, but in the last few seconds have a look around to see if anyone has followed you all the way.
